How to Release Emails from Mimecast

Mimecast protects our organization by holding emails that appear suspicious. Occasionally, a legitimate email may be held. Follow this guide to review and release held messages through the Mimecast desktop shortcut.


🔹 Step 1: Open the Mimecast Portal

  1. On your desktop, locate the Mimecast shortcut icon or go to https://login-us.mimecast.com/ to login online.

  2. Double-click the shortcut to open the Mimecast Personal Portal.

  3. Sign in using your work Microsoft 365 email and password.


🔹 Step 2: Access Held Messages

  1. In the left-hand menu, click Held Messages.

  2. A list of emails currently held by Mimecast will appear.


🔹 Step 3: Review Email Details

Before releasing an email, review:

  • Sender

  • Subject

  • Reason Held

  • Message Preview (if available)

⚠️ Do NOT release or permit messages from unknown or suspicious senders.


🔹 Step 4: Release a Single Email

  1. Select the email you want to release.

  2. Click Release.

  3. Choose from:

    • Release – Sends the email to your inbox one time.

    • Release & Permit – Allows the sender permanently and delivers future messages.


🔹 Step 5: Release Multiple Emails

  1. Use the checkboxes to select multiple emails.

  2. Click Release at the top.

  3. Confirm your selection.


🔹 Step 6: Manage Senders (Optional)

  • Permit Sender → Approves all future emails from the sender.

  • Block Sender → Prevents the sender from sending you future emails.


🔹 Step 7: Check Your Inbox

Released emails typically appear in your inbox within 1–2 minutes.

If you do not see the released email:

  • Check your Junk Email folder.

  • Refresh Outlook.

  • Contact IT if the issue continues.
